Hurricane Melissa Relief Effort

Dear Friends,

Hurricane Melissa has brought widespread devastation to Jamaica, leaving many communities in urgent need of relief and support. The storm’s powerful winds and heavy rains have caused severe flooding, destroyed homes, disrupted essential services, and displaced countless families. Your generous contribution is vital in providing immediate aid—such as food, water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter—as well as supporting long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and communities impacted by this disaster. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and help Jamaica recover from this heartbreaking event.

Several Houston-based Jamaican and Caribbean groups, including the Jamaica Foundation of Houston, Houston Missouri City Domino Club, Association of Jamaican Nurses of Greater Houston, IRIE Community, and I Love Being Caribbean, are collaborating to deliver relief and hope. We deeply appreciate your unwavering support following Hurricane Melissa’s impact. Your generosity has enabled us to make significant progress in providing aid to those in need. Our initial donations were directed to Hanover Charities and Food for the Poor, organizations dedicated to assisting vulnerable communities and promoting sustainable recovery.

Thank you for your compassion and support in helping Jamaica heal and rebuild.

Financial Contributions

Your donations continue to enable us to provide timely assistance. Since starting our relief efforts, we are close to processing the financial contributions we’ve collected and sending them to trusted organizations, including Hanover Charities and Food for the Poor. These funds will be utilized to purchase and distribute essential supplies directly to impacted communities. Many donors have also taken advantage of corporate matching programs, amplifying their impact.

Item Donations & Logistics

Our team has organized the collection of essential relief items, including non-perishable food, medical supplies, toiletries, and building materials. We are pleased to share that three containers have been sent to Jamaica, carrying the necessary resources to support rebuilding efforts. We sincerely thank all volunteers and partners for their dedication and hard work in sorting, packing, and preparing these shipments.

Partnerships & Collaboration

Working alongside trusted organizations such as Food for the Poor, Hanover Charities, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the Jamaica Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami, we have established an efficient distribution network. These partnerships ensure that aid reaches the most vulnerable communities swiftly and securely. In addition, we are actively exploring collaborations with other organizations that can provide immediate relief and boots-on-the-ground assistance. Our goal is to expand our reach and ensure that aid is delivered as quickly as possible to those in urgent need.

Community Engagement & Next Steps

Our Town Hall meetings and media updates have helped keep the community informed and engaged. We are planning additional outreach events and volunteer opportunities to sustain momentum and expand our impact.
